MICRON CENTER FOR MATERIALS RESEARCH
The Micron Center for Materials Research will help elevate materials research at Boise State University to national prominence.
The Materials Science and Engineering program at Boise State was established in 2004 to address the workforce and technical expertise needs of our region’s economy. Since then, with generous community and industry support, the program has developed into a vibrant hub for innovative research and teaching. In 2016, the Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering was established within the College of Engineering. Boise State materials science researchers are making nationally and internationally recognized discoveries that make solar energy more economical, batteries more efficient, infrastructure more sustainable, and generally promote a greener world.
Thanks to the generous support of the Micron Foundation and others, construction of the Micron Center for Materials Research will enable further growth of high-tech, science and engineering related programs and engineering-related industries. The center will serve as the backdrop for continuing to build a program reputation that attracts federally-funded research awards. Researchers from diverse backgrounds in science, technology, engineering and math will be able to collaborate within the same facility for creative partnerships, including an anchor for the close ties with the Center for Advanced Energy Studies.
The Micron Center for Materials Research will also provide the needed facility for the growth of the Materials Science and Engineering program that has expanded to nearly double in size from nine to 15 faculty in just 18 months.
Boise State University is committed to advancing society through materials research. A facility devoted to materials research will help elevate our program to national prominence. Partnerships strengthen this commitment. We are excited for you to share in our mission to make a positive impact on society.

“There has never been a more urgent need for this center. It will elevate our materials research to national prominence and allow students and faculty access to a world-class facility in which to conduct research that will lead to profound discoveries.” — Amy Moll, Dean, College of Engineering
“The implementation of new state-of-the-art lab facilities...would provide unique opportunities for future students to have better access to equipment and lab space that will broaden their skill set, complement and enhance their classroom experience, and enable greater collaboration between research groups within the university.” — Armen Kvryan, Graduate Student
“Materials define what is technologically possible, and through their manufacturability, they also define what is economically possible.” — Peter Mullner, Distinguished Professor
